Unattended Bags and Drinks

Your staff should be more concerned when patrons leave large bags unattended. Also, no beverages should be allowed.

Unattended bags can be concerning. Our staff strives to remind everyone not to leave any of their belongings behind. This is a public space with all that entails.  Currently, only covered beverages are allowed such as bottles of water.

Director’s Report to the Board of Trustees

Where is the Director's Report to the Board of Trustees for January, February and March?

The January and February reports are now available. The reports are prepared for the board meetings which take place on the third week of the month. Please expect the March report at that time.

Past Book Lists

Need to have a list of books already taken out so we don't have to say I had this or I have seen this before.

Libraries don't keep backlists of your book in order to protect your privacy. Under the Patriot Act, any such saved list would have to be given to the police when requested. We apologize for the resulting inconvience.

Copy Machine Table

Please place a table next to the copier. Your older machine had a shelf to hold paper. Thank you.

The copier machine is currently in a temporary location. When our construction has finished, it will be moved to a more accessible area with more room to spread out.

Shelf Height

Placement of audio cassette shelve too high and too low for senior sto see- very difficult to locate cassettes.

New Book shelves- too high for seniors to see or reach. Step stools too dangerous to use safely.

The main issue with our shelving is space. While we try to provide our materials in the most convient way possible, its difficult to contain a comprehensive collection in our existing space without using vertical real estate. With that in mind, we do our best to keep the collections fresh and free of titles that cause clutter. Whenever possible we don't utilize the top and bottom shelves.

Website Updates

y'all need to update website more regularly. You have same quote of the month (been there since at least December) and you still mention "The library will be closed on Monday, February 17 for President's Day."- that
was a week ago! come on!

Thank you for pointing out the President's Day listing. It has now been removed. We strive to make our website a lively and active place with regular blogging from many of our librarians and up-to-date listings of our upcoming events. Please check back regularly over the next few months for updates on our ongoing construction.

Nativity Scene

Would you please take down the nativity scene in A/V.  It is very offensive to an atheist.  Every belief or non-belief should be represented equally or not at all.  Thank you.

Director's Response: The nativity scene was permitted in the A/V area in response to there having been a menorah that celebrated Chanukah.  In the interest of fairness, I consented to the Nativity scene being represented in the same location.

I will recommend to the Board of Trustees for its January 16, 2014, meeting that the library adopt a policy of there being NO representation of religious observances in the New City Library.  This recommendation is consistent with your proposed alternative that there be “[none] at all.”

My recommendation will not pertain to the holidays of Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day.  Although both holidays had religious-based origins they are both celebrated as lay-holidays—the former, honoring love, and the latter honoring the Irish people.
