Annie Oakley

Annie Oakley was born Phoebe Ann Moses on August 13, 1860 in Darke County, Ohio.
When her father died, she helped support her family by hunting game for a local grocery store. By the time she was fifteen, she was able to pay off her family's mortgage.  "Renowned for unparalleled shooting tricks," she became
"a star attraction for Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show for years."  She performed for European royalty and when she met Sitting Bull, he gave her the name, "Little Sure Shot."  Throughout her career, Oakley earned great fame and money, which she shared with her extended family, orphans and the Red Cross during World War I.  She died in 1926.  But the legend of Annie Oakley was immortalized by Irving Berlin in his 1946 musical , Annie Get Your Gun.
