Beyond Books: The Director's Film Series

Many of our patrons may not be aware that, over a year ago our Director, Mitch Freedman, started a Thursday afternoon film series. Every Thursday, at 1:00PM, the library shows a film which has been personally selected by him.

Each series of movies has either been based on a particular theme or on the body of work of individual actors or actresses.  Some of the series shown were union-themed films, movies based on the theme of libraries and librarians, and Jewish culture themed movies. Some of our series based on individual works have been those of Charlize Theron, Joan Allen and our very popular summer series of Frank Sinatra films. Also shown are movies which have been directed by Paul Schrader, a Westchester resident.  For the movie Adam Resurrected, which Mr. Schrader directed, we were lucky enough to be able to have Mr. Schrader talk to us about his film after its showing.  Next week, on November 13th, we will be showing the film "The Comfort of Strangers" and we will, once again, have Mr. Schrader here to talk to us about the directing of this film.  The week after, on November 20th, we will be showing the movie "The World According to Garp" (1982). Starring in the movie are Robin Williams, Glennn Close and Mary Beth Hurt. After viewing the movie we will have a special appearance by Mary Beth Hurt who will talk about  her experiences in making this film.

If you would like to see a full listing of the movies which have already been shown, and also a preview of upcoming films, you can go to our homepage at www.newcitylibrary.org. Under the "events" tab you will find a linlk which will take you directly to the Director's Film Series page.

Also, in the library, in our DVD section, we have a top shelf devoted entirely to the films which have already been shown in the series. If you were not able to make the original showing, you now have the opportunity to see them, at home, at your own convenience.

Coming in January, I will begin my own showing of foreign films on Tuesday afternoons at 2:00PM.  The first film will be "Ida", a Polish film which has received many international film festival awards.  Please look in our Winter newsletter which will cover the library's programs for the months of December, January and February.  These newsletters should reach your mailboxes sometime in late November.

Until next time...........
