Hair-Raising Horror: Tales to Terrify

terrified man - photospin 963_4483691With Halloween only a week away, I'm sure many readers are looking for that perfect book to get them into the spooky spirit. I have the ideal list-- a blood-chilling blend of recent and classic horror, thrillers, dark graphic novels, and even a little non-fiction.

Although... hm. I can't really call this a recommended reading list. To be honest, while many of these titles are critically-acclaimed masterworks of horror, I wouldn't personally recommend any of them. I'm a horror wimp, and I like being able to sleep at night.

Instead, let's call this a warning list. As in, WARNING: The books on this list are terrifying. No, I'll go even farther than that-- they're downright disturbing.  Epically creepy, and (in some cases) grotesquely gory. (That's another warning, by the way-- splatterpunk (which is as icky as it sounds) is well-represented here.)

Some of you poor souls will only take my warnings as encouragement, or perhaps as a dare. "I can handle it," you'll say. "I read scary stuff all the time." You may be right-- after all, 90% of the planet has a higher scare tolerance than I do.  If you enjoy a good horror novel, if you actually like being terrorized by your reading material, these books could be right up your dark, haunted, demon-rat-infested alley. (Though you still might want to read them in daylight. With the lights on. Preferably with a valiant teddy bear and a large bludgeoning object close at hand.)

You never know, these books still might be too much for you. (I mean it, these books are really, REALLY scary!) But if you choose to ignore all of my warnings... well, there's nothing I can do to stop you. On your head be it.  You're certainly a far braver soul than I.  All I can do is wish you good luck...

...and pleasant nightmares.

(Go ahead. I'm sure you can turn off that bedroom light at any time.)
