The Book Whisperer

Each year at Back-to-School Night, teachers will ask, "What are your goals for your child this year?"  Every year, my answer is the same---"For my son to enjoy reading."  And each June, as the school year comes to an end, my son still doesn't enjoy reading.  He doesn't want to read.  He makes up excuses not to read or why he hasn't completed his summer reading assignment.  Now that he is in the seventh grade, I realize I have to find a new tactic.  Recently I came across The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller.  The author is a 6th grade reading teacher from Texas.  Her classroom goals include reading and writing proficiency like any other classroom.  But her main objective is to get kids to love to read. Did I mention that her book's full title is The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child?  Now I ask myself, "Why don't I live in Texas?" and "Why can't she be my son's teacher?"  She has a common sense approroach to teaching that includes daily independent reading, peer recommendations, and role models, as well as the freedom to self select which book each student will read.  She believes that practice paired with instruction will create a habit of reading even outside the classroom.  Enough said.  This book is available here at the library (372.6 Mille) or just check out The Book Whisper website.  You won't regret it!
