Reading Between the Lines: A Series of Book Discussions

Travel and Tourism Narratives of the Empire State is the discussion series selected for the Winter/Spring 2009 season.  Provided by a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities, the series is in conjunction with the Hudson-Fulton quadricentennial 2009 celebration.  The four discussions will be held the first Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. starting in February.

Books will be distributed to registered members and discussions will be led by Dr. Sherrill Wilson, an urban anthropologist.

To register for one of the discussions or for all four, call 634-4997, ext. 139.

January 5 - An open house to pick up the first book in the series and listen to Dr. Wilson's overview about the discussions.

February 4 - The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.  This classic short story set in the Hudson Valley is a tale of romantic rivalry that climaxes with the arrival of the Headless Horseman.

March 4 - The Artificial River: The Erie Canal and the Paradox of Progress by Carol Sheriff.  This book examines the impact of the Erie Canal on the lives of ordinary people.

April 1 - The Second Greatest Disappointment: Honeymooning and Tourism at Niagara Falls by Karen Dubinsky. A look at the cultural significance of the Falls, both for its visitors and in our collective imagination.

May 6 - Taxi! A Social History of the New York City Cabdriver by Graham Russell Hodges.  The series concludes with this fascinating book that explores the development of the city through this iconic profession.

The group meets at 7:00 p.m. at the New City Library on the third Wednesday of each month, except in September when we will meet on the fourth Wednesday.  Everyone is welcome to attend. 

March 18 - The Country of the Pointed Firs by Sarah Orne Jewett.
Explore the relationship between two genres.  Read The Country of the Painted Firs .  Listen to an art history talk relevant to the art featured in the stories on Wednesday, March 11, at 1:30pm.  Then, join this AAUW discussion group on March 18 to talk about them.
 
April 15 - The Careful Use of Compliments by Alexander McCall Smith

June 17 - Luncheon (Location to be announced at a later date).  Bring book suggestions for 2009-2010.

For 25 years, this group met here monthly to discuss various drama selections.  In December 2008, the original members still participating decided to retire the organization.  Their focus and interest added to the richness of literature and discussion at the library.  The staff would like to thank them for their long history of dedication.

Investigating Mysteries

This group meets the second Monday of every month at New City Library at 7:30 p.m. 

March 9 - The Bootlegger's Daughter by Margaret Maron.  This Edgar award winner from 1993 is the first in the long-running and popular series featuring attorney Deborah Knott
 
April 13 - Photo Finish by Ngaio Marsh.  Inspector Alleyn travels to New Zealand to consult with an opera diva plagued by a stalker.

 
May 11 - Family Honor by Robert B. Parker.  Former cop turned P.I. Sunny Randall is hired as a bodyguard for a wealthy teen who refuses to return home.
