Coding: Creating Art in the Face of Danger   Tuesday, Jan. 17, 7 PM

Artist and author Clifford Tisdell looks at how artists have handled fear, for their lives or careers. He examines how they used “coded” visual language to escape personal and professional harm.

Dr. Mike Norris will lead an armchair tour of fabulous private gardens, from ancient to medieval, brought to you by the art and plants of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cloisters. 

In Defiance: Runaways from Slavery in New York’s Hudson River Valley, 1735 – 1831 Tuesday, Jan. 24, 7 PM

Susan Stessin-Cohn of New Paltz discusses her book In Defiance , recently published by Black Dome Press. Her book contains reprints and transcriptions of more than 550 newspaper notices published from 1735 and 1831, four years after slavery was abolished in New York State.

Scrawl 2017: Teens' Writing Wanted

The Teen Librarian Division of the Library Association of Rockland County is proud to announce that they will be publishing Scrawl 2017, their second collection of fiction, non-fiction and poetry written by local teens.This juried publication will feature guest editors Carolyn MacCullough, Emmy Laybourne, Abby Sher, and multiple award nominated horror author JG Faherty! The book launch will be at a Rockland County Library on a Friday in May 2017.
 
Anyone in grades 6-12 and living in Rockland County can submit their writing. The piece may be no longer than 2,000 words. The deadline is Feb 8. Submissions should be sent to [email protected].
 
A separate contest for cover art is also open to anyone in grades 6-12 who lives in Rockland County.
