Not Just for Teens

Most adult readers regard "teen" literature as something to be avoided, since they are "children's" books.  I once had a customer  request a particular book she had seen in Barnes & Noble.  She was really excited about reading it, however when I said that the book was in the Teen Room, she quickly said she didn't want it.  I couldn't persuade her to change her mind.  Many teens, especially Clarkstown teens, can and do read on an adult level.  Teen books usually indicate that the marketing department of a publishing house thinks the book will sell more copies if it is marketed to teens.  In the past several years, I've seen some teen books become wildly popular with the general public, such as The Book Thief by Markus Zusak or The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne and all the books by Stephenie Meyer.

So Many Ways to Listen

This past month, we have added MP3 compatible CDs to our audio book collection.  These disks will play in any MP3 disk player and in any late model car disk player.  One major advantage is that most books will just have one disk and the lengthy books will usually have just two disks.  No more fumbling with changing disks in the middle of a book.  For those of you who listen in the car, no more temptation to change disks at that stop light on New Hempstead and look up to find the light has turned green and everyone is honking at you.  Some of our new titles include:

     “Mystery writer Ariadne Oliver calls upon old friend Hercule Poirot to help unravel the mystery behind the apparent double suicide of General and Lady Ravenscroft fifteen years earlier. In such a cold case, the two must rely on the memories of “elephants,” those older people who were around at the time, who recall events relating to the tragedy. John Moffatt’s narration is charming. Poirot’s Belgian accent and the variety of accents identifying British social classes are utterly believable. Moffatt’s sense of timing exactly captures the period, and no bon mot is left to chance. .., even Agatha Christie’s lesser works are entertaining, and Moffatt’s performance makes this one well worth a listen.”

New City Champions --- Battle of the Books

In a contest between 10 libraries, our teens came in second place in The Battle of the Books at the beautiful new Warwick Library on Sunday, September 12.
